Environmental protection based on environmental science plays a key role in the developed societies of the 21st century. More and more questions emerge worldwide concerning the state of the environment, its registration, and the prediction of the direction of changes, which require the joint work of experts of different scientific fields.

Environmental science, as a field based on natural sciences and engineering, as well as humanities in many cases is a new discipline that is acknowledged in the scientific listing of most countries. This fact receives a significant emphasis in light of Hungary joining the European Union, which has been implementing more developed environmental protection practices.

From the aspect of the number of professionals, ELTE TTK is the largest base of researchers and instructors, where all fields of natural sciences are represented on the highest level. Consequently, after deliberation of our responsibility and the tasks ahead of us, to advance and coordinate the joint tasks connected to environmental science, in 1996 the Council of ELTE's Faculty of Science established the

Center for Environmental Studies of ELTE's Faculty of Science.

The underlying concept was that an institutional unit, in the form of a center shall be created to fulfill the multidisciplinar tasks, the organization of education and the multidisciplinar research tasks. Members of the Center for Environmental Studies are volunteers from different departments of the Faculty. Any employee of the Faculty may work on any environmental fields in the Center, in line with the rules of the Faculty.
