Róbert (Erdelyi) von Fáy-Siebenbürgen has received a prestigious award
Róbert (Erdelyi) von Fáy-Siebenbürgen, a research professor at the University of Sheffield and at the Faculty of Science of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), has won this year’s prestigious Cecelia Payne-Gaposchkin Prize from the Institute of Physics (IOP).

The Institute of Physics—the professional organization uniting physicists in the United Kingdom and Ireland—awarded Róbert (Erdelyi) von Fáy-Siebenbürgen for his outstanding contributions to solar theory over the decades and innovative approaches and leadership for ground-based solar instrumentation with application to space weather.

Part of the instrument development led by Róbert (Erdelyi) von Fáy-Siebenbürgen has taken place at the Bay Zoltán Solar Physics Observatory in Gyula, which operates under the auspices of the Hungarian Solar Physics Foundation (hspf.eu). The Observatory also plays an important role in the Faculty’s teaching: ELTE astronomy students regularly take part in solar-physics observations here, gaining key knowledge about the solar-physics aspects of space-weather research—expertise that is essential for training the next generation of outstanding researchers.
