Applied Mathematics MSc

2024.12.19.
Applied Mathematics MSc
The program gives comprehensive knowledge of several areas in applied mathematics, and includes both theory-oriented and application-oriented courses. The main topics are applied analysis, operations research, stochastics, and theoretical computer science, but courses are also available in the areas of bioinformatics, machine learning, financial mathematics, network optimization, cryptography, and modern computational methods.  The program is aimed at students who have a BSc degree in mathematics or a related field (physics, computer science, engineering etc.) In the latter case a certain number (65) of mathematical credits is required from earlier studes.

Our instructors all have scientific degrees and good research record. Of particular interest is the fact that many researchers in the internationally renowned Hungarian school of combinatorics have started their career at our university and many of them still have position at  the Institute of Mathematics. For example, the Wolf Prize and Kyoto Prize winner Prof. László Lovász, who is also the winner of the Abel prize for the year 2021, is a professor at our university.

Completion of the program opens up a wide-range of career opportunities in information technologies, industrial research and development, finance, and software development. Furthermore, graduating from our program is a very good starting point for doctoral or (at a later stage) postdoctoral studies in applied mathematics.

The language of instruction

The program is offered in both English and Hungarian.

Specialization

  • Applied Analysis
  • Operations Research
  • Theoretical Computer Science
  • Stochastics

The program can also be completed without a specialization.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of our program will be able to apply their mathematical knowledge in developing innovative applications across various sectors of the economy (such as in banks, insurance companies, and industry), in public administration, or in research within other scientific fields.

Experience shows that there is a strong demand, both domestically and internationally, across the industrial, commercial, and academic sectors for our graduates—professionals with high-level mathematical expertise, proficiency in applications, and a familiarity with IT. Many graduates also pursue further studies in doctoral programs, where they have the opportunity to compete for prestigious scholarships.

Admission Requirements

In addition to graduates with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, applicants from other undergraduate programs are also welcome. We encourage applications from students in natural sciences, engineering, and information technology fields who possess a solid foundation in mathematics.
