Habilitation is the academic recognition of teaching and lecturing ability and academic achievements. Submission of the application:

the complete application documentation must be sent electronically and directly to the ELTE EHB (ELTE University Habilitational Committee) Secretariat.

The University recognises the merit of a person who proves

  • having a broad overview and up-to-date scientific expertise in the given academic discipline and is able to communicate his/her knowledge orally and in writing, to a high standard (in English and in Hungarian)
  • having taught for at least four semesters at a national or foreign higher education institution in a taught programme since obtaining the PhD degree or equivalent academic qualification (hereinafter jointly referred to as "doctoral degree"),

The application documentation (full and flawless, along with the certificate of procedural fee’s payment) must be submitted to the Secretary of the ELTE EHB (ELTE University Habilitational Committee: Ms Maria FOKI. (maria.foki@rk.elte.hu)

Procedure:

The first step in the procedure is for the relevant Disciplinary Habilitation Committee (SzHB) to examine the application and appoint a Disciplinary Evaluation Committee (SzBB), which includes two Reviewers.

The Reviewers will prepare their assessment of the habilitation documentation. In the case of two positive evaluations and with the approval of the Chair of the SzHB, the Candidate may start to organise his/her habilitation lecture(s), which consists of a habilitation lecture (class) and a scientific lecture, the latter including a short summary in English, on the same day, consecutively.

In case of a positive opinion of the SZBB, the SZHB will examine the minutes of the habilitation lecture(s). In case of a positive opinion, it will prepare a recommendation to the Faculty Habilitation Committee (KHB) for awarding the habilitation title. In the case of a positive recommendation by the KHB, the final decision is going to be made by the University Habilitation Committee (EHB). The EHB issues a habilitation diploma in Hungarian and Latin, which can be received at a ceremony.

Procedure for the acceptance of a habilitation obtained in another higher education institution:

The ELTE University Habilitation Committee (EHB) will, after a procedure and examination, accept and consider as equivalent to a habilitation awarded by our University a habilitation obtained abroad or at another higher education institution in Hungary if:

  • it was awarded by a foreign or domestic educational institution that is entitled to award a habilitation under the law of the foreign state, or, in the case of a domestic institution, under the Nftv.
  • the requirements for obtaining the habilitation meet all the requirements laid down in these Regulations.

In the course of the procedure, the application documentation is first examined by the specialised Disciplinary Habilitation Committee (SzHB). In case of a positive result, the SZHB makes a recommendation to the Faculty Habilitation Committee (KHB) to accept the habilitation. In case of a positive recommendation by the KHB, the final decision is taken by the University Habilitation Committee (EHB). The EHB issues a certificate (decision) in Hungarian on the acceptance of the habilitated title.

The rules on habilitation procedures are set out in the University Habilitation Regulations available (in Hungarian) at:  https://www.elte.hu/dstore/document/697/ELTE_SZMSZ_III_HABIL.pdf
