ARWU: The Faculty of Science Leads in Three Subject Areas in Hungary
Our university achieved four absolute first places and one shared first place in the domestic rankings of the 2024 subject rankings, while our faculty proudly secured three first places and one second place.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published its 2024 subject rankings on November 11. These rankings examined the programs of 5,000 universities from 96 countries and regions across five major academic fields (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences) and within 55 narrower subject areas. Ultimately, the list included the programs of 1,900 universities.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) appeared in the rankings for seven subject areas, achieving absolute first place in four (mathematics, physics, psychology, and education) and a shared first place in one subject area (environmental science) among Hungarian higher education institutions. The ranked subject areas, along with ELTE's international and domestic placements, are summarized in the table below.

Compared to last year, ELTE improved its ranking by one category in mathematics and environmental science, while its research in veterinary medicine, classified under this category based on the Clarivate database, appeared on the list for the first time this year.

The global edition of the ranking has been published since 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since 2009, the evaluation has been conducted by an independent organization, ShanghaiRanking. Separate subject rankings have been released since 2017, based on the number of high-quality (Q1) scientific publications, citations, the proportion of publications co-authored with foreign researchers, publications in leading journals or presented at prominent conferences, and the number of researchers recognized with major awards. In 2024, a new "world-class faculties" category was introduced, which assesses institutions based on four additional indicators: award-winning scientists, highly cited researchers, editors-in-chief of scientific journals, and leaders of scientific organizations. More details about the methodology are available in English on this page.

As in previous years, Anglo-Saxon universities dominated the top positions in 2024. Of the 55 subject areas examined, American institutions ranked first in 29. Harvard University claimed 14 first places, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 4, Beijing's Tsinghua University 3, while Princeton, the University of Chicago, and Oxford each secured 2.

The results of the 2024 subject rankings can be explored by academic fields, subject areas, and countries on the ARWU website, while our Faculty's performance in both domestic and international rankings is detailed in this article.
