Master's Programme in Biology

The training medium is English so students can gain a better command of the academic English in different fields of biology. During their studies, students can participate in different (university and country) level competitions where they can practice presentation of their research achievements in a conference setting.

STUDY PROGRAMME

Students participate in intensive advanced and high level courses in the different fields of biology, which are the most relevant for their specialization, to make them informed about the recent developments and frontline problems. Some 60 % of time is practical hours (spent on laboratory/field practice and on research) ensuring knowledge of state of the art methods. The curriculum is assembled from intensive advanced level courses on the theoretical aspects of selected disciplines and special seminar series on problems in a narrower field of science.

The program also involves practical courses and a supervised research activity, which is needed for the preparation of the “M.Sc. Thesis”. In the first two semesters emphasis is on theory and basic laboratory or field practice.  The third and the fourth semesters are devoted to research and preparation of thesis.

Five sub-programs (program specializations) are possible. These sub-programs cover the most important fields of biology. (For further details of sub-program structure see http://bio.elte.hu/engedu/MSc_bio/bioMSc_curr_modul.htm.) The five sub-programs offer knowledge that is up-to-date. Students enroll in one of these according to their interest. With choosing a Program Specialization, students also choose the field in which they will prepare their M.Sc. thesis work. A committee from teachers in the biology program will evaluate the „M.Sc. Thesis”.

Besides teaching, there is an international level research work at each department, which gives possibility for students to learn the most important methods in different research fields of biology. During their thesis work, M.Sc. students join a research group preferably in a department of the University, but research groups in other universities or laboratories can also be chosen. Students have their own research project, which they work on under the supervision of a project leader. Project leaders usually also act as tutors, who are responsible for the progress of the students and for giving advice in assembling a personal curriculum for them.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Students having diploma from the Biology Master of Science Program of Eötvös Loránd University will be competent researchers in any countries on wide fields of biology from basic to applied science, they can get a job as researchers in industrial firms, different research institutes or even in other universities. Diploma awarded by Eötvös Loránd University scores full marks worldwide.

Those who do not want career as a researcher but are interested in more practice oriented jobs can exploit their knowledge from this program, after some further training, in teaching, in managing technology development projects at industrial or agricultural firms, and in governmental organizations.

Application procedure

Applicants have to apply by the deadline given. They must submit all the required documents, photo (see for the complete list above), contact information (e-mail address and Skype ID code) and their chosen sub-program by the end of May. Also by this time they will receive a topic list that is used in the entrance interview. With this list at hand applicants can prepare for the interview, refreshing their knowledge regarding those fields of biology that are related to the sub-program the applicants have chosen.

Notification of applicants about the exact time of interview is scheduled mid-June. The time of interviews is the end of June or early July.

The admission to the program is decided on the result of an oral interview through Skype. A committee of teachers from the appropriate sub-program interviews the applicants. The applicants will be notified by the interviewer, or the program coordinator through e-mail several days before the interview about the exact time of the interview.  On the interview short questions are asked from the topic list that applicants received weeks before.  The questions are from those fields of biology that belong or related to the sub-program which has been chosen by the applicant.  Applicants has to answer the questions promptly.  The duration of the interview is about thirty minutes.  When all the interview has been finished, the committee of teacher decide who can be admitted to the program.  The applicants will be informed about the decision by the vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science by the end of July.  Those who get a letter about a positive decision (official letter of acceptance) can use that letter to initiate visa application.
