The ELTE University’s Doctoral Rules and Regulations

The Doctoral Regulations are included as an annex to the Organizational and Operational Regulations (Volume II) of ELTE, specifically in the HKR supplement, and can be accessed here in Hungarian (effective from September 2016). How to take the complex examination

Applying for the examination

In the 4th active semester of the doctoral studies the doctoral student has to apply for the complex examination. Passing the complex examination results in fulfilling the requirements of the training-and-research period of the training and the doctoral student can continue by entering the research-and-dissertation period.  The amount of necessary credits required for acceptance of applications is determined by the doctoral schools. Details can be found in the curriculum of each doctoral school. (see www.elte.hu)  Deadlines for submitting the application material: 31st of March in the Spring semester and 31st of October in the Autumn semester. 

 

Application material

As part of the application material the doctoral student has to submit to the Doctoral Office (Northern block, room 0.130) during office hours

  • complex exam application form (see attachment on bottom of this website )

  • the written evaluation of the supervisor(s) on the student's research work

  • declaration of student's choice of subjects (see attachment on bottom)

In case personal submission is not possible, the documents can be forwarded by e-mail in scanned version (Pdf. files) to doktoranduszugyek@ttk.elte.hu . To find out if additional documents are to be submitted and/or sent by email please contact the programme director.

 

Complex examination

The subjects, the complex examination committee members, the date and place of the examination are determined by the doctoral school’s council and will be approved by the Doctoral Council of the Faculty. The complex examination shall be taken in public, in front of an exam committee. The supervisor of the student may be present at the complex examination but may not act as an examiner and may not take part in the student’s evaluation.  The complex examinations will be set for the period between 20th of May and 15th of July in the Spring semester / between 17 December and 1 February in the Winter semester. Exact information regarding date and place of the exam will be sent by e-mail to the student. The complex examination consists of a theoretical part and a dissertation part. In the theoretical part the doctoral student will be tested in 2-3 subjects. The list of subjects is included in the curriculum of the doctoral schools. (see www.elte.hu/kpr) In case of failure in one subject (or more), you can retake the exam(s) once in the same exam period. In the dissertation part of the complex examination the doctoral student has to give a presentation to demonstrate his/her level of academic progress (results, papers reviewed, submitted, or published).
