Two days after the U.S. News & World Report, another authoritative ranking has confirmed ELTE's leading role in Hungarian higher education. In this year’s world ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds, which lists more than 1500 institutions, Eötvös Loránd University achieved the 595th place.

Quacquarelli Symonds published the results of the 2027 WUR (World University Rankings) on 18 June. In compiling the ranking, the performance of over 8,800 higher education institutions from 106 countries around the world was assessed based on nine weighted indicators (academic reputation, citations, employer satisfaction, graduate employability, faculty-to-student ratio, sustainability, as well as international education, research collaborations, and students). You can read more about the evaluation methodology on this link.

The 2027 top list ultimately included the best 1,504 institutions, with 98 of them appearing in the ranking for the first time this year.

Eötvös Loránd University ranked 595th overall, making it the top higher education institution in Hungary,

In Europe, it is in the same league as such competitors as the University of Siena (572nd), the University of Bremen (581st), the Brno University of Technology (588th), or Manchester Metropolitan University and Tallinn University, who are tied at 600th place.

ELTE achieved the best results in the indicators assessing international research collaborations, sustainability, and graduate employability, while in the national field it also placed first in academic reputation, graduate employability, and international research collaboration.

Besides ELTE, nine other Hungarian institutions are included in the ranking. Last year’s winner, the University of Debrecen, is second in Hungary this year and 600th overall; the University of Szeged is the third best nationally and 633rd internationally. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics ranks in the 751–760 range, the University of Pécs is within 791–800, while the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Óbuda University, Széchenyi István University in Győr, and the University of Pannonia all placed in the 1001–1200 range, and the University of Miskolc is in the 1401+ category.

Intensifying Global Competition

The top of the ranking has changed little compared to previous years, but higher education institutions in East Asia and the Middle East are delivering ever stronger results in key indicators, reinforcing international competition – notes the QS statement. This year’s top 10 includes four American, four British, one Chinese, and one Singaporean university, with the podium taken by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London, and Stanford University.
