Main research areas
Paleoecology is the study of the interactions between organisms, the interactions between organisms and their environment, and the functioning of ecosystems on a geological time scale. The researcher conducts macrobotanical studies, which involves the determination of plant macrofossils and the reconstruction of the prehistoric environment based on macrofossil remains. Plant macrofossils are dead plant parts that can be extracted from sediments and are visible to the naked eye. The researcher is looking for answers to questions such as what species the Pleistocene and Holocene flora consisted of, how the vegetation was built and how the ecosystems functioned, what environmental, especially climatic, conditions characterized the Quaternary Period. Environmental conditions also include anthropogenic effects.
