ELTE still holds its position in the THE ranking

Eötvös Loránd University was placed again in the 801-1000 category this year on the Times Higher Education ranking, making it part of the national elite.

Times Higher Education published this year's global university ranking on 30 September 2026, in which the performance of 2,297 higher education institutions from 118 countries was evaluated. 

The ranking is compiled every year using 18 indicators in total, grouped into four main categories: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. You can read more about the ranking methodology on this link.

This year, one more Hungarian higher education institution made it to the ranking compared to last year, making a total of 13. There has been no change at the top: among Hungarian universities, Semmelweis University is ranked first (247th place), Óbuda University is second (701-800th place). Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Debrecen are placed in the 801-1000 category.

Among Hungarian institutions, the Corvinus University, the University of Pécs, and the University of Szeged are in the 1001-1200 category, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the 1201-1400 category. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics is ranked in the 1401-1600 category, Széchenyi István University and University of Pannonia are in the 1601-1800 category, and Pázmány Péter Catholic University and University of Miskolc are in the 1801-2000 category. Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, Neumann János University, and University of Sopron were also evaluated, but they were not included in the ranking. 

At the top of the world ranking for the 11th consecutive year is the University of Oxford, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holds the second position, and Princeton University and Stanford University share third place. The creators of the ranking highlighted that, for the first time, three Asian universities are among the top 15: China's Tsinghua University has advanced to 11th place, Peking University is 13th, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) stands at 15th place.
